Don't Throw Out those Orange Peels!

They're worth their weight in gold. Okay, in Cointreau, which is rather expensive.

Say you're making a lovely orange tart, and have supremed and segmented five gorgeous oranges and now have a rather large pile of peels all orange and glowing and pleading with you not to put them into the municipal compost. They have other things in mind. Like vodka. Seriously.

Push those peels into a mason jar, and add some nice, oily coffee beans if you are a coffee lover, add a few tablespoons of sugar, fill with vodka and shake. (Shake after you have secured the lid - but if you haven't figured that out yet, you may not need any more vodka in your system.)

Put your lovely jar in a nice cool place, such as your basement, and give a shake once in a while as you are walking by. In a couple of weeks, strain into a nice little bottle. You will have a very strong liqueur now. If you prefer it milder, mix with simple syrup to taste to mellow it out.

Makes for a delicious after dinner sipper!

Whether enjoying during the game...or the next morning as a little "hair of the dog", a Michelada is the way to go!  A Mexican drink that mixes cerveza with anything from hot sauce to lime juice to tomato juice to clamato juice, choose your favorite version and kick back with a frosty glass.  Other things are often added...I tend to think of this as the beer-drinkers answer to the Bloody Mary.  But hey, that's just my opinion.  Here's one version.
slightly adapted from Houston Classic Mexican Recipes
serves 12ish...I prefer a smaller dose of mixer in mine

10 oz. fresh lime juice
3½ Tbs. Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp. soy sauce
10 oz. hot sauce  I used Valentina
¼ tsp. black pepper
2/3 tsp. Maggi sauce*
12 beers of choice I used Modelo Especial

Mix together all ingredients except beer.
Pour 2 oz. of mixture (I prefer 1 oz. mixture per beer, but that's just me) into each glass and top off with one beer.  If you like it spicier, add a dash of hot sauce.  Garnish w/ lime slice.

I've seen them everywhere! I've even done a lot of playing around with the ole pomegranate and it's luscious juices....but I have to say...until today, I was a Pomtini "innocent". It was the peer pressure that got to me. I just couldn't say no anymore. The good vodka was on sale. Week after week. And they kept saying....oh just buy it!

But...but.....why isn't the good tequila on sale?!

So I bought it. Me not being a vodka drinker, had no idea what to do with it. So I searched for something to make tonight (because I happen to be out of tequila)...something that did not require me to change out of my sweats and schlep my lazy butt to the store.

And here you have it.....the perfect drink to make a lazy gal in her sweats and slippers feel special (and elegant if she closes her eyes)

2 oz Vodka
4 oz Pomegranate Juice
1/2 oz Orange Liquor

Shake with ice, and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with some pomegranate arils and a slice of orange.

The more you drink, the more special and elegant you will feel. Just don't look in the mirror.

Tips.....shoot. I had two of them. but I can only remember one. Ok...for the orange liquor, I used Patron Citronge. Triple Sec....I just can't like it. If you  have an aversion to it, use a better quality orange liquor.

Oh ya.... the other tip.... just so those of you who don't know...1/2 oz equals one tablespoon. (You're gonna need that if you're getting ready to make your 3rd or something.)

How Do You Make a Pirate Float?

A couple of tasty types of booze and some cream. Why? What were you thinking?

If you are in a Pirate kind of mood, and of course I refer to the tasty gentleman below and not to the sweaty beasts who man actual pirate ships, what you need is a sweet and refreshing beverage  to complement your swashbuckling evening. No, not yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. Something girly. With cream. So you can feel delicate and feminine while you wait for Johnny Depp to whisk you away. What? It could happen.

Pirate Float
10,000 Drinks

1 part Spiced Rum
1 part Rootbeer Schnapps
1 part Vanilla Vodka
1 part Cream

Shake with ice, pour into a tall glass or cocktail glass of choice.
Speak with terrible pirate accent for as long as you can get away with it.
